JLC Brunch 2008 PDF Print E-mail

The Jewish Labor Committee's 74th Anniversary Annual Awards Brunch on Sunday, June 29, 2008, was a tremendous success.

We want to extend a sincere thank you to all our supporters who made this event possible. As the hundreds who attended this event ate, they were entertained by rousing songs performed by Reardon's Raiders--an impromptu group of area singers formed to honor Roberta Reardon, National AFTRA President, who received the Jim Doherty Dor L'Dor Mentoring Award.

Other honorees included Robert Aquino, Executive Director, EAA/IUPA Local 8000, who received the Abe Levy Chaver Award, Annelle Grajeda, President, SEIU Local 721, who received the Max Mont Mensch Award, and Brian D'Arcy, Business Manager and Financial Secretary, IBEW Local 18, who received the Henry Fiering Union Advocacy Award.

Greetings were heard by the Honorable Brad Sherman, United States Congressman, Stuart Applebaum, President, National Jewish Labor Committee and President, Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, and from Marc Carrel, Board Member, Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles.

Special thanks go out to our brothers and sisters at IATSE and Musicians Local 47 for providing an amazing set and sound set-ups and to JLC Interim Director Paul Koretz for using his superb talent enhance this special event.

We look forward to another year of serving the Labor and Jewish Communities in our quest for fairness and justice and hope to see you at our annual brunch next summer.

Welcome to JLC PDF Print E-mail

As an organization that pursues the shared agenda of both the trade union movement and the organized Jewish community, the Jewish Labor Committee plays a unique role as the bridge between the two.JLC

The JLC is deeply involved in many issues of immediate and pressing concern to the Jewish community. We seek to build support for the State of Israel, to fight for the rights of East European Jewry, to further the teaching of the Holocaust and Jewish resistance, to promote a pluralistic workplace and society, to combat anti-Semitism, and to otherwise enhance the security of Jewish communities around the world. In these efforts, the JLC has been able to turn for critical and powerful support to the organized labor movement at the local, national, and international levels.

The JLC is also actively involved in the trade union movement. We seek to advance the rights of working men and women by mobilizing support from the Jewish community and the general public for the labor movement in its efforts to organize and represent American workers, by promoting the use of union services and products, by supporting the maintenance and advancement of labor standards, and by supporting legislation that will improve the lives of working Americans. To these ends, the JLC works on an ongoing basis with local, national, and international Jewish agencies to advance the broad social agenda of the labor movement that we firmly believe is of benefit to all people.

Because of the interests of the Jewish community and the labor movement are so compatible, in many instances our primary role is to bring these like-minded communities together. Both share a deep and abiding commitment to democracy, human rights, and social justice. Both recognize that their own well-being depends on the acceptance of those values of home and abroad, and this enlightened self-interest has led them to adopt common positions on most issues of public policy. Their common interests call for each to continue to strengthen the other in a coalition for the welfare of our country and people.
